While traveling through Costa Rica, my wife and I stayed in a lovely resort outside of La Fortuna.
La Fortuna is located in the Northern Highlands of Costa Rica, roughly 2.5 hours from the San Jose international airport. It's named for the good fortune of NOT being wiped away by the violent eruption of the nearby Arenal Volcano in July 1968.
For several days, the eruptions continued, burying 5.8 sq. miles in molten rock. 3 villages were completely destroyed, and 87 people perished. La Fortuna, however, was completely untouched.
Here's where it gets weird ... The common myth is that the town was renamed after the catastrophic eruption to commemorate the luck of being shielded from the volcanoes blast.
Not so. The residents of the town of El Borio voted to rename the town to La Fortuna (meaning The Fortunate) several years before the devastating explosion of lava ever happened. 🤔
